Imphal, December 02 2015:
For Imphal to make the grade of a Smart City, there is the growing need to put in place a proper public transport system, opined retired IAS officer and present Consultant of the State Government, RK Nimai.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, RK Nimai said that it is also important to let the people really know what a Smart City is and added that there is the need for the people to develop civic sense.
Since Imphal is not a planned city, it is yet to take on the characteristics of a city and added that there is nothing much that makes Imphal unique.

Since extra land would be required to develop a new city and again since there is no available land at the moment, the best option would be to work on the existing city, opined the Government Consultant.
In other cities basic civic amenities such as water and power supply are taken care of by the respective Municipal Corporations and not the line departments.
This is not the case with Imphal.
Maintaining liquid and solid waste management by the respective Municipal Councils is need as also to locate schools, hospitals and markets at their rightful places, he added.
The Government Consultant further said that there are different needs at different places of Imphal and explained that while some localities may need water and power supply, there are other places which need proper roads.
All these points have to be taken into account to make Imphal a Smart City.
Expressing doubt on the funding to make Imphal a Smart City, RK Nimai said that since the project will be taken up under the Public-Private partnership pattern, the private players will want a return on their investments.
