National workshop on wetland protection held

A one-day national workshop on 'Protection and Conservation of Wetlands' was held at the court hall of Manipur University, Canchipur on Saturday.
MU Department of Zoology, Pole Star College Department of Environmental Science, and Biodiversity, Ecology & Environment Network (BeeNet) Manipur jointly organised the workshop in association with Wildlife Institute of India.
MU VC professor Naorem Lokendra and Zoology de partment head professor Thingbaijam Binoy attended the workshop as chief guest and president respectively.
MU botany department head professor M Damayanti and BeeNet Manipur working president and MU students' welfare former dean professor N Mohilal were also present as guests of honour while Directorate of Environment and Climate Change joint director Dr T Brajakumar attended as special guest.
Speaking on the occasion, professor N Mohilal emphasised on the need for having better understanding not only among the public but also among the policy makers in order to protect and conserve wetlands, which is a crucial part of the ecology.
The work shop was organised to discuss the way forward to conserve the losing wetlands of the state as well as the nation, he said and added that BeeNet Manipur will make efforts to organise similar workshop at the international level in the future.
Noting that there were several smaller lakes in the state but many of them had vanished and many others including the famed Loktak Lake and Pumlen Lake are on the verge of extinction, the Mohilal said that many of these water bodies have his torical importance and there is the urgent need to take up a proper policy to conserve them.
