Abolition of Loktak Act demanded

Imphal, November 25 2011:
A public meeting held at Thanga today has demanded abolition of Loktak Protection Act, 2005 contending that the Act has not only defaced the natural look of Loktak but has also deprived the livelihood of the fishermen.
Convened by All Loktak Lake Area Fishermen Union, the meeting further demanded that Loktak lake should be handed over to the people or allow participation in the efforts being made for development of the lake.
Furthermore, the meeting demanded fresh review on the pros and cons of Ithai Barrage, taking up welfare measures for the fishermen, payment of compensation for the demolished floating huts and withdrawal of the eviction order issued by Loktak Development Authority (LDA) on November 11.Co-ordinator of Apunba Lup Phulindro Konsam, Secy UPF O Bikramjit, Secy CCDO Jiten Yumnam, Secy HERICOUN Y Surjit, Vice President NIPCO Sunil Karam and Helen of AMUCO were among others who were present and addressed the meeting.
