Imphal, September 25 2012:
A nation cannot develop without the feeling of nationalism among its citizen, C Upendra, Retired Session Judge has observed.
Speaking as Chief Guest of the XVII Manipur University Inter-College Literary Meet-2012 today, Upendra said that nationalism gives special rights to citizen to militate against arbitrary discrimination by authorities or any other external forces.
Nationalism brings unity among the people and without it, a nation cannot go forward.
However, excessive nationalism and patriotism should not be encouraged as it creates a negative impact in future, he added.
Stating that patriotic literary meet provides a chance to explore the latent talents of the youths especially among the students, Th Ratankumar, Dean of Student's Welfare, MU, said that patriotism and nationalism is important to build up a healthy nation.
He also accused the "corrupt political leaders" in the state for creating an atmosphere of individualism that lead to the present socio-economic and political turmoil.
Problem is Manipur is due to the lack of nationalism among the political leaders.
They are corrupt because they do not have the feeling of nationalism.
Corruption is deeply rooted in the minds of the corrupt political leaders, and it develops a feeling of individualism among them.
If they have the feeling of nationalism, they might have work for the betterment of the state, but unluckily the situation is just the opposite, he added.
Ngariyanbam Milan, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, who presided over the function, opined that education system in the state is responsible for lack of nationalism and patriotic feelings among the people of the state.
