Karong MLA stresses vigilance against food adulteration

Karong MLA J Kumo Sha inaugurated the district's first "Eat Right Mela" under theme "Eat Safe, Eat Healthy & Eat Sustainability" at Multipurpose Hall, DC office complex, Senapati.
Speaking at the event organised by the district administration in collaboration with Food Safety Administration, Senapati, MLA Kumo Sha suggested that such a food mela be organised annually to educate the common people about the food.
He said that every individual needs to know limit of foods he/she should have to keep oneself fit and healthy.
He then urged food producers and shopkeepers to sell healthy foods to their customers and also asked the authority concerned to check whether food items sold in the market follow FSSAI standards, while reiterating his suggestion that such event be organised at remote villages in the district.
In his address, Senapati DC Mahesh Chaudhari informed that the Eat Right Mela was started in 2018 and urged the gathering to be vigilant citizens by adopting healthy eating habits, understanding food safety and doing regular physical exercises.
Dr Pfokreho Pfoze, CMO Senapati, in his speech stated that today's generation has many health issues including diabetes, BP stroke, heart failure and kidney failure which are related to one's food habits.
Such diseases were rare in the olden days, he maintained and cited data that reports that 41 million people die of non-communicable diseases every year.
Stressing on the importance of consuming healthy foods to stay healthy, he expressed that the event is a good platform for mass awareness.
As part of the programme, an interactive session was held with experts and a drawing competition among the students present in the second session.
10 local food stalls were also opened.
In day's event, "Eat Right Walkathon" from Senapati Traffic Point NH-2 to multipurpose hall, opposite Mini Secretariat Complex, Senapati was flagged off by DC Mahesh Chaudhari.
Placards that read, "Eat safe, eat healthy & eat sustainable, "Be a smart consumer", "Eat right live longer", "Trans-fat: A silent killer", "Eat right, stay bright", "Reduce salt, reduce oil and reduce sugar", "Eat local, eat seasonal, eat variety", and "Don't eat less, Eat right" among others were held up during the rally.
The programme was attended by district level officers, civil society organisations, students from various schools, proprietors of food stores and shopkeepers.
The 1st prize for the drawing competition was bagged by Mt Everest Hr Sec School while Bethany Hr Sec School secured the 2nd prize and St Anthony's School was declared the 3rd prize winner.
