Govt discusses water scarcity problem

Chief minister N Biren along with water resources minister Awangbow Newmai, Public Health Engineering (PHE) minister L Susin-dro and officials of departments concerned discussed the problem of water scarcity in Imphal and its surrounding areas.
When asked about details of the meeting held from 10am at the CM's secretariat on Wednesday, PHE minister L Susindro informed The People's Chronicle that Singda Dam used to be the main source of water for Imphal areas but drying up of the dam coupled with erratic rainfall caused the problem of water scarcity in many localities of Imphal.
After thorough discussion on finding alternative source of water, the meeting unanimous agreed that supply of water from Chingkhei Ching coming from Thoubal Multi Purpose project will be the best option to solve the problem of water scarcity in Imphal areas.
According to L Susindro, hectic works are on to provide water from Chingkhei Ching to localities facing water scarcity problem and pipe lying and connection works are going on in full swing.
By February 5, the responsibility of handling Chingkhei Ching and supply of water from it could be handed over to the state government.
Existing pipelines in Sagolband, Thangmeiband and Patsoi areas which supply water from Singda Dam will be connected with the pipeline from Chingkhei Ching for supplying water, minister Susindro informed while revealing thatv government is also considering to channelise water from Chingkhei Ching to rivers to solve present problem of water scarcity in Kei rao area.
Apart from this, government is planning to keep 50 water tankers with 4000 litres capacity each at different areas of Imphal for providing water to people, the minister added.
