Bishnupur, January 20 2019:
Denouncing the notification issued by the Additional Chief Secretary of Forest and Environment to convert 103.10 hectares of Thinungei village near Loktak Lake, Bishnupur district into a bird sanctuary, JAC against the Announcement of Bird Sanctuary Thinungei organised a protest rally and sit in protest at Thinungei Bazar today.
The rally which commenced from Thinungei Bazar marched upto the resident of MLA K Govindas and submitted a memorandum.
A similar memorandum was also submitted to its Pradhan before culminating the rally at Thinungei Bazar again and staged a sit in protest.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, treasurer of the JAC Haobam Shyam said that the land planned by the State Government to build a bird sanctuary has been providing a source of livelihood for many local populace including the widows.
Saying that the villagers will be greatly affected if the sanctuary is built and may cause many untoward incidents, Shyam requested the concerned authorities to withdraw the notice and look for another means to protect the birds.
If the Government fails to give positive response by January 25, different type of intense agitation will be launched, he added.
During the sit in, several placards that read "Save fisherman lives" "Withdraw Government notification for opening a bird sanctuary" were used among others.
