Many attend Lucy's funeral service

Kakching, July 19 2023: Lucy Marem Maring, who was killed brutally by some people at Keibi Heikak Mapal in Imphal East district on July 15, has been laid to rest at Kanemram village near Pallet.

After the post mortem examination at JNIMS morgue on Wednesday, Lucy Marem's body was brought at Kanemram village community hall wherein large number of people paid floral tribute to her mortal remains before funeral service.

The funeral service was attended by Hill Areas Committee chairman MLA Dingan-glung Gangmei, Chandel MLA Ss Olish, United Naga Council (UNC) president Ng Lorho, Naga Women Union president Asha Wungnam, Naga Women Union Chandel president K Choirita Tarao, Chandel Naga People's Organisation (CNPO) general secretary D Thamdok, All Naga Students' Association of Manipur (ANSAM) president Luikang Luckson, Maring Upa-rup Assembly (MUA) president K Yaima Maring and others.

In his speech at the funeral service, Dinganglung Gangmei said every people of the state including government condemned the killing of Lucy Marem.

With the thought that cordial relation among different communities should not be strained, the government held talk with the concerned stakeholders regarding Lucy Marem's killing and reached an understanding, he said and expressed happiness over resolving the matter.

According to Dinganglung, there had been many com munal clashes in Manipur like the present one in the past but no side emerged successful when we look back the history of Manipur.

These clashes give impact to innocent people including women and children, he said and called upon all the communities of Manipur to work toward restoring people and normalcy by forgiving and forgetting mistakes if any.

He also said that guns will never bring solution and it is only through dialogue that that present conflict could be resolved.

Entire people of the state were saddened on hearing news of the brutal killing of Lucy Marem, Chandel MLA Ss Olish said at the funeral service and prayed to God that killings in the state be stopped with Lucy Marem's death.

Meanwhile, Maring Uparup Assembly president K Yaima Maring thanked all the people who worked towards resolving the killing of Lucy Marem as Advance Farmers Development Organisation, Kakching strongly condemned the killing of Lucy Marem and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace in the heavenly abode.

Four days after Lucy Marem was shot dead, her family members claimed the body on Wednesday.

Lucy Marem, a Maring Naga, who lived in Imphal's Game village but was originally from Narum (Beulahram) village in Chandel district, lost her life during mob violence.

Following a meeting with Chief Minister N Biren at the CM's secretariat on Tuesday evening, an agreement was reached between the United Naga Council (UNC) and the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) with regard to the killing of Lucy.

As per Naga customary law, the state government pledged to provide a compensation amount of Rs 10 lakh to the deceased's next of kin.

An additional sum of Rs 5 lakh will be allocated to fulfil the ritual requirements as per Maring customary law.

and an equal amount of Rs 5 lakh will be dedicated to fulfilling the educational needs of the deceased's 16-year-old daughter, Marim Shangpui.

Moreover, once Marem's daughter becomes eligible, the state government has committed to offering her a government job corresponding to her educational qualifications.
