Imphal, October 18 2021:
Communist Party of India (CPI), Manipur State Council has strongly condemned the use of police force to stop the election campaign rally of intending candidate Thounaojam Brinda of Yaiskul assembly constituency on Sunday.
Addressing a press meet at the party office here on Sunday, CPI Manipur State Council secretary L Sotinkumar said that Thounaojam Brinda is a renowned police officer for her relentless endeavour to save the youth from the menace of substance abuse and expose drug lords.
Her election campaign was stopped by police citing different reasons.
On the other hand, several intending candidates of BJP are carrying out various election-related activities including house campaigns while flouting Covid protocols.
It is highly condemnable that the BJP government prevented Brinda's rally while at the same time allowed BJP members to carry out whatever activities they want.
It is not the characteristics of a free and fair election, he said while drawing attention of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
He further said that it will not be long before the state assembly becomes a house of looters, drug traffickers, contractors and retired bureaucrats unless the present system of election is changed.
With number of crorepatis increasing in the state assembly and the parliament, the common people will suffer more, he said and also alleged that programmes like Go to Hills and Go to Village of the government are nothing but election gimmick.
All Manipur Nupi Marup president Sumatibala also strongly condemned the government for preventing Brinda's election campaign rally.
Instead of stopping the rally, the district administration could have allowed the rally by setting certain criteria such as routes and timing.
Even though BJP's union MoS Pratima Bhoumik spoke of women empowerment, Sunday's police action against Brinda's poll campaign rally shows otherwise.
It was a clear act of suppressing the women folk, she said.
