Senapati, May 17 2022:
The Mayangkhang villagers residing above the NH-2, where widening work of 4-lane road is underway, decried alleged inaction of the NHIDCL engaged in the work to their repeated reminders to construct proper retaining walls.
Some 10 houses including living rooms, kitchen, granary and one house under construction belonging to some five different owners had sunken.
The incident forced the house owners to move to other safe places.
Some portion of IVR that was recently constructed has also sunken beyond repair.
An elderly woman whose house also was on the sunken portion lamented that their land and house have sunken due to absence of proper retaining walls along the road.
Their kitchen had reportedly sunken which had been removed recently.
The family are scared to live there and have been taking shelter at their relatives' house.
The family reportedly cook at their living room during morning and evening but scared to sleep there not knowing when the house would sink.
Their kitchen garden was also reportedly swept away by landslide on Sunday.
A village elder also stated that house owners had left their houses for fear of landslide, pointing out that there are no proper retaining walls in the area.
The villagers had reportedly appealed to the NHIDCL before arrival of rain to build them so as to avoid any untoward incident in the area.
With incessant rainfall over the past 2-3 days, landslides occurred in the area destroying more than 10 houses belonging to 5-6 owners.
Even the constructed retaining wall for some portion is reportedly sub-standard causing crack in the middle portion of the retaining wall and the upper portion of the village has started to sink forcing the residents to leave their houses.
The village elders also appealed to the authority concerned to look into the matter and redress their grievances at the earliest possible.
