Locals dig up road to protest poor condition

Frustrated by the government's alleged inaction in repairing the Mayai Lambi section of the inter-district road despite repeated requests, members of Mayai Lambi Apunba Lup, dug up a portion of the road in protest on Sunday.
On receipt of the protest, a team oflmphal West district police arrived and dispersed the demonstrators, leading to a brief stand-off with the protesters.
Four women protesters were arrested by the Wangoi police but were later released.
However, the protestors said that they will intensify the agitation until the authority starts actual work on the ground.
The protest was called off after the PWD executive engineer for NH-1 assured that repair work would be initiated as the protesters cautioned of launching more intense agitation if the assurance is not translated into action.
According to one H Khomdonbi, Mayai Lambi Apunba Lup had launched a protest in July urging the government to repair the road stretch followed by the Lup's representatives meeting with the chief minister on July 30, during which the latter assured to start repairing the road at the soonest possible.
However, after initial stages, the repair work discontinued, consequently constraining the public to launch agitation by digging and blocking the road, in protest, she elaborated.
