Imphal, July 15 2024:
The Under-Graduate (UG), Post-Graduate (PG) and doctorate (PhD) students joined the hunger strike protest at A-Block of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) on Monday, demanding appointment of a regular vice chancellor and registrar of the varsity, and ensure smooth functioning of the same.
As the hunger strike protest completed the 15th day on Monday, DM University Students' Union president Irom Dimochana said that the varsity has yet to appoint a regular VC and registrar even after six years since getting recognised as a university, seriously affecting the academic career of the students.
Despite multiple requests to the authority concerned in this regard, no action has been taken up till date, thereby compelling the students to stage the protest.
The protest would be withdrawn once the interview result for the post of registrar and non-teaching staff held in 2021 is declared along with speedy appointment of a VC, failing which the protest will intensify, he declared.
Meanwhile, members of DM College Alumni Association met with the protesting students on Monday.
Speaking on the sidelines, Association secretary Sanasam Joykumar extended full support to the protest while declaring that if the government fails to act soon, then the Association along with the guardians will join the protests and further intensify the same.
Meanwhile, 6th semester stu dents from component/constituent colleges of the varsity set fire to benches and desks in front of the A-Block on Monday, protesting that their future career must not be put at stake.
One of the protesting students said that since DMU became masterless, the students have been greatly affected.
While other universities are all set to commence their PG courses, the results for the 5th semester examination of DMU are yet to be declared and the 6th semester examination yet to be conducted.
Many students of DMU have scored high marks in CUET-PG 2024 but are unable to pursue their PD at other universities.
Thus, he urged authority concerned to look into the matter and save the career of the students.
