Kangpokpi, September 13 2024:
Kuki-Zo community across Leimakhong-Kangchup area in Kangpokpi district took out a protest rally on Friday, vehemently condemning the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) recent actions.
The rally, organised by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) in collaboration with Leimakhong Area Protection Committee (LAPC), denounced CBI's decision to investigate 32 Kuki-Zo individuals in connection with the alleged killing of a Meetei man last year "during a crossfire" .
CBI had issued a notice to Kangpokpi SP' requesting the examination of these individuals on September 11, 12, and 13, via video call at local police stations or suitable locations.
CBI's move has sparked outrage within the Kuki-Zo community, who view the action as biased and unjust, particularly given the numerous unresolved cases of violence against then-community.
At a public meeting held in Hengjang village, protestors chanted slogans such as "No arbitrary investigation on innocent Kuki-Zo," "No justice with nepotism," and "Equal justice; equal law," highlighting their discontent with what they see as a selective approach to justice.
CoTU condemned CBI's actions as "ill-timed and insensitive," pointing out that many heinous crimes against the Kuki-Zo community remain neglected by national investigative agencies.
CoTU spokesperson Ng Lun Kipgen expressed deep frustration, stating, "The Kuki-Zo community does not oppose investigations.
However, at this critical time, when crimes against us are ignored, it raises- serious questions about the state's intentions.
Why is the state quick to act On behalf of the valley people while consistently disregarding our grievances?" .
He emphasised that CoTU, reflecting the will of the Kuki-Zo people, will not accept any investigations by state or Central authorities until law and order are restored and democratic governance is reinstated.
"We stand united against any arbitrary investigation until our community's safety, security, and justice are guaranteed," he added.
