Imphal, July 13 2021:
Manipur Police which has been maintaining the law order as well as fighting the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic is in a dire situation with many of its stations running without any official vehicles and if available the personnel are footing its fuel bill from their own pocket.
According to sources, Yaingang-pokpi police station under Imphal East district earlier had an official vehicle for the station's OC, but now no vehicle has been allotted to the station.
The station's personnel are using their own vehicles for work related to law and order and Covid-19.Sometime, they have to hire vehicle for activities related to raising Covid-19 awareness as well as other security issues.
In case of Lamlai police station, it has only one Maruti Gypsy for the OC and a Tata 407 truck.
As such, the personnel face huge inconveniences as the lone truck could not ensure smooth operation in case of law-and-order issues or emergency situation.
The station had already requested authorities concerned for allotting a pick-up truck but there has been no positive response so far, the source lamented.
Porompat police station also has only two vehicles allotted for it, including one Maruti Gypsy for the OC and the newly launched 24x7 Toyota Innova patrol car.
Having only these two vehicles is a big problem for the personnel while taking up law and order as well as Covid-19 measures.
There are presently four 24x7 patrol cars which were launched by the chief minister being utilised by the police including one at Porompat police station, one at Heingang police station and two used by the commando units.
However, so far authorities concerned have not provided funds for fuelling the vehicles and the police officers themselves have been footing the fuel bill from their own pocket.
They are even pooling money for taking up repair work of the cars.
On an average, the cars guzzle-up at least 10 litre of fuel per day.
So, at the time when fuel prices are sky rocketing it's hard for them to continue as usual, said another official.
