Project aims to revive spring water in Lunghar village

Imphal, November 12 2021: With the aim of reviving the vanishing spring water sources in Lunghar village of Ukhrul district, a pilot project is being taken up under the Springshed Management Programme in Indo-Himalayan region.

Directorate of Environment and Climate Change is implementing the project in association with Advanced Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (ACWADAM), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMoD) and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

The programme, which began from Thursday, will continue till Tuesday.

A team of directorate of environment and climate change led by joint director Dr Tourangbam Brajakumar along with ACWADAM executive director Dr Himansu Kulkarni, scientist Md Imran Siddique, social scientist Simran Sumbre, SDC representative Ghanashyam Kharel and ICIMoD's Madhav Dhakal would be carrying out mapping and impact assessment exercise of springs during the programme by staying in the village.

Interacting with the media at the launch of the project, Dr Brajakumar said that the pilot programme tor reviving spring water sources was taken up in Lunghar village' after a survey of catchment areas in the state while keeping in view of the potential and importance of reviving the vanishing spring water sources there.

The Phangrei range in Lunghar area is a natural water reserve and the springs in the village area provide water to the nearby villages for consumption.

On the other hand, Shirui range provides water in Ukhrul district headquarters area.

Speaking about spring water sources and the Springshed Management Programme, Dr Himansu Kulkarni informed that ACWADAM has been carrying out researches in springshed management for the last four decades and Lunghar is the first project in Manipur.

They will take up similar initiatives in other areas of the state to revive vanishing spring water sources in association with government, social organisations and community, he said.

Later, the team along with local youth and elders visited Sabhangahor spring located near Phangrei hills range.

There are around 25 springs in areas under the jurisdiction of Lunghar village.
