Jiri teachers decry UG demands, police arrest

Denouncing the frequent monetary demands from various underground organizations and also the arrest of innocent teachers by the police, All Manipur Elementary Teachers' Association, Jiribam (AMESTA) organized a sit-in protest in front of the Congress office at Babupara from 10.30 am to 3 pm here today.
The demonstration was held to protest the monetary demands served on teachers working in schools from lower primary level to high schools in Jiribam sub-division by various UG groups, and also the arrest of innocent teachers by police.
Placards with slogans such as 'We condemn monetary demand', 'Don't disturb school environment', 'Don't victimize teachers' and 'Keep Education a Free Zone' were put up at the demonstration site.
In connection with the protest, Th.Mangi Singh, President of All Manipur Elementary Teachers' Association, Jiribam said the teachers strongly denounce the frequent monetary demands from various UG groups and also the recent arrest of a teacher called 'oja Madhop' by police.
L Rajen Kumar Singh, Gen Secy of the Association who spoke on the sidelines of the protest also urged all concerned to extend cooperation in making education a free zone area.
