Imphal, December 10 2021:
In its Universal Period Review report submitted to the United Nations from time to time, India had accepted in the year 2017 that Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 is being imposed in some specific places like Manipur (Kangleipak).
This indicates that India imposed martial law in Manipur (Kangleipak) and WESEA region since the year 1958 with the imposition of AFSPA and people of the region are being denied basic fundamental rights as enjoyed by the citizens in other parts of India.
Intellectuals, journalists and innocent civilians are being slapped with National Security Act (NSA) and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), 1964 by the namesake Mani-pur government at will thereby muzzling the voices of dissent and public opinions.
Apart from this, movement being initiated by the people for restoration of sovereign status of Manipur (Kangleipak) is being wrongly portrayed to the international fraternity as 'terrorist' act to sabotage and dilute the genuine movement, the CorCom statement said and stressed the need for continuously making aware people across the world about excesses committed by Indian security forces in Manipur (Kangleipak) like rape of women and killing of innocent youth who indeed serve as backbone of the society.
According to the CorCom statement, the theme of this year's International Human Rights Day observance makes clearer the thought about the right to live independently to people across the globe but it is contradictory for people of Manipur (Kangleipak) whose sovereignty had been snatched away.
Ever since India occupied Manipur in 1949, people of the land have been continuously launching movements to regain their lost sovereignty.
During the course of the genuine movement for regaining sovereign-ty which could not be suppressed at all, Indian forces under the immunity granted by various black laws imposed in the land killed and tortured scores of people while modes-ty of many women outraged.
However, India is yet to punish any of the guilty security personnel and continues to protect them and at the same time claims to be frontrun-ners among global countries in protection of human rights.
All the countries of the world have ratified UDHR but the government of India is still imposing the most draconian of the black laws -AFSPA, 1958 to allow Indian forces continue torture and elimination of innocent civilians in the region under one pretext or another.
Despite knowing fully that AFSPA is contradictory to provisions under Article 13 of the Indian Constitution, the judgment given by India's apex court the Supreme Court that Union Legislature (Parliament) could enact such laws itself indicates carelessness about the right to life of indigenous peoples of WESEA and Manipur (Kangleipak).
While taking only the military version seriously and sidelining aspirations of the people, India still imposes the draconian law regardless of violating human rights to completely suppress people of the region and perform their illegal activities at will.
On the occasion, the CorCom reminded to the people of Manipur (Kangleipak) that India will not readily handover the lost sovereignty and hence a collective movement to regain the lost sover-eignty is very much essential.
