Imphal, September 10 2020:
Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Awangbow Newmai has declared that a policy would be framed which would reduce jhum cultivation in the hill districts of the State.
He made this announcement at a workshop held today at Tamei headquarters under the aegis of Forest Department on conservation of environment, restoration of jhum fields and protection of hornbill habitat.
Noting that 80 per cent of the hill people engage in jhum agricultural practices, Awangbow Newmai lamented that there is no policy of the State to reduce or wean away farmers from jhum cultivation.
He assured that a policy would be formulated soon to reduce jhum cultivation in the hill districts.
CCF (Territorial-2) W Yaiskul, DFO Tamenglong Kh Hitler, staff of Forest Department and chiefs of surrounding villages attended the workshop.
