Teen shot dead at Moirangkampu, JAC formed

Imphal, February 10 2025: Unknown persons shot dead a 15-year old boy at Moirangkampu Awang Leikai under Porompat police station op Monday.

The deceased teenager has been identified as Laishram Malemnganba alias Thoinao s/o (L) Laishram Ibomcha.

He worked as a daily wager.

His father passed away few months back.

According to a police report, the incident occurred around 12.30pm Monday close to Puri Puraba Laibung, Moirangkampu along the road leading from Khurai Angom Leikai (Iril river side) to Khewa Thongkhong.

Malemnganba, who was hit on the head, died on the spot.

A cousin, who witnessed the shooting, recounted that Malemnganba after moving earth in the morning had his lunch and both left home on a Yamaha Z bike to buy some items from a shop in Telipati.

When the duo reached the incident spot, a black colour Swift coming from Khurai Angom Leikai side stopped them with four occupants of the car questioning who Amar was between the two of them.

Malemnganba responded that neither was called Amar.

However, one of the occupants alerted his companions to grab Malemnganba and his cousin, apparently fearing that the duo has recognised them.

In the melee, one of the four opened fire hitting Malemnganba on the head.

The shooter then pointed at his cousin s chest and attempted to shoot him as well.

However, the gun jammed for 2-3 times, allowing him (cousin) to escape while shouting for help.

The assailants then got into the car and fled the scene, narrated the survivor cousin.

On receiving reports of the incident, a joint team of Imphal East district police, CDOs and Porompat PS arrived at the scene.

Porompat PS immediately registered a case and a team of forensic experts conducted inquest of the body, while also collecting evidence incriminating items during preliminary investigation of the crime scene.

The CDOs detained some people found at the scene and handed them over to Porompat PS for verification.

It is not known why the unidentified persons shot Malemnganba dead and attempted to kill his cousins as well.

A combined team of Imphal East district police CDO and Porompat PS has launched investigation and conducted search operations to identify the people involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, Moirangkampu Development Committee, Moirangkhom Union Club and Moirangkampu Nupi Thoudang have strongly condemned the killing of Laishram Malemnganba near the crematorium of Moirangkampu Awang Leikai on Monday.

A press release issued by the Club informed that JAC against the brutal killing of Laishram Malemnganba (Thoinao) has been formed.

The JAC demanded those concerned to explain the reason behind the killing within 24 hours.

It further demanded the police to arrest the persons involved within 24 hours and award befitting punishment under the law, failing which the JAC will not claim the dead body.
