Imphal, August 09 2018:
Protection and Preservation Committee, Manipur (PPCM) has appealed to all to cooperate and participate in the observation of the 71st Manipur Independence Day, 2018, which will be organized by the committee at Youth Welfare Club, Palace Compound.
Speaking to media persons at PPCM office at Waheng Leikai today, its convenor N Bimol Meitei conveyed that the observance is planned to mark the significance of Manipur's independence from the British empire before the Manipuri kingdom merged with the Indian Union.
He reminded that Manipur became free from British rule in the midnight of August 14, 1947, after the latter colonized Manipur in 1891.The then ruler/king of Manipur Maharaja Bodhachandra hoisted Manipur's seven colour flag at Kanglaat 7.45 am, August 15,1947, after the British empire officially handed over Manipur to the king.
That was a historic moment for all the Manipuris and it is equally important to let the people of Manipur, particularly the younger generations, know and remember the facts.
Hence, PPCM is observing the historic event this year at Youth Welfare Club, Palace Compound, like in the past, he added.
He also appealed to the public to extend all possible support, including financial assistance, in organizing the function and also appealed to all to participate in the function as well.
