Imphal, September 08 2024:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has raised serious concerns over the recent escalation of violence in the state, and questioned the chief minister's ultimatum to resign unless the power of the Unified Command is transferred back to him.
Speaking at a press conference at Congress Bhawan here on Sunday, MPCC president K Meghachandra criticised the CM's stand, calling.it a potential "drama" aimed at diverting attention from the ongoing crisis.
Meghachandra expressed deep concern over the use of drones and long-range rockets to target civilians, a new and alarming development in the violence that has plagued Manipur for the past many months.
He noted that Jiribam, which had seen a brief return to normalcy, has again flared up with renewed violence.
MPCC shares the grief of the victims in this latest escalation of violence, he stated.
This is the first time in India that weaponised drones and long-range rockets have been used in civilian conflict, marking a dangerous escalation in the violence, though there have been multiple communal clashes in different parts of the country since Independence.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remained silent, failing to offer any condemnation or sympathy for the victims, Meghachandra noted.
The MPCC president also criticised the Central government's takeover of state affairs, pointing out that the CM had been stripped of his power as chairman of the Unified Command on May 30 last year.
This is a tight slap to the state government as well as the people of the state, undermining the state's constitutional power of maintaining law and order, Meghachandra said.
He accused the state government of being rendered powerless, leaving the people without any rights or protection.
Meghachandra further questioned the CM's ultimatum, asking why he remained silent when he was first removed from the Unified Command chairmanship.
Now he is threatening resignation if the power is not restored.
Is this yet another drama, he asked, urging the chief minister to stop playing with the emotions of the people.
Meghachandra called for real leadership and initiatives to resolve the ongoing crisis and restore peace, warning that the people of Manipur are already exhausted and can no longer endure political theatrics.
