65th Van Mahotsava 2014 celebrated

The 65th Van Mahotsava - 2014 festival organized by Forest Department, Government of Manipur was held today at the premises of Thoubal College with Agriculture Minister Abdul Nasir attending as Chief Guest.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Nasir said that it has become necessary to collectively understand the consequences and adverse impact of clearing forests and called upon the people to take a lead role in planting more trees and preserving forests to tackle climate change in the State.
He further said that the celebration of Van Mahotsava festival which was inaugurated for the first time by the then Agriculture Minister Dr KM Munshi in 1950 reminds everyone the responsibility to be initiated to safeguard the environment for conducive human survival.
He noted that mass deforestation of forests is one of the factors responsible for drastic climate change in the State.
Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, PN Prasad, Principal, Chief Conservator of Forest stated that planting of trees can tackle the environmental pollution which is posing a serious health hazardous.
He also noted that forests are places where endangered species are taking shelter.
So, clearing forest would lead to serious problem.
Today's function was also attended by P Brojen, MLA of Wangjing Tentha A/C and O Chaoba, principal of Thoubal College as President and Guest of Honor respectively.
As part of the programme, dignitaries planted tree saplings at the college campus.
