Imphal, September 02 2022:
Five out of six MLAs of Janata Dal-United (JD-U) have merged into BJP and the speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly has accepted the merger under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution of India.
According to a bulletin published by the secretary of Manipur Legislative Assembly on Friday, the five JD-U legislators who have merged into BJP are Thangmeiband MLA Khumukcham Joykisan, Tipaimukh MLA Ngursanglur Sanate, Jiribam MLA Md Ashab Uddin, Wangkhei MLA Thangjam Arunkumar and Churachandpur MLA LM Khaute.
Mention may be made here that JD-U fielded 38 candidates and won six seats out of 60 in the recent 12th state assembly election and offered their support to BJP in forming the government.
The only remaining MLA of the party is Md Abdul Nasir of Lilong assembly constituency.
With JD-U breaking ties with BJP and forming alliance with RJD and other parties in Bihar, the party was considering its stand about their support to the BJP-led government in the state.
The party's state leaders had even issued statements about possible withdrawal of support from the coalition government in the state.
Meanwhile, a reliable source said that the five MLAs are likely to be felicitated by BJP president JP Nadda at the party's office in New Delhi on Saturday.
At the same time, there is no confirmation regarding the position of Lilong MLA Md Abdul Nasir after he was left out from the merger.
However, the source said that he is also likely to join the saffron party within a short period.
Chief Minister N Biren is presently in the national capital and Md Abdul Nasir has also rushed to the national capital.
Whether or not he will meet and discuss his position with the CM and other party leaders is yet to be confirmed.
On the other hand, JD-U state president former minister Kshetrimayum Biren, who is in Patna in relation with the party's national executive and national council meeting, told The People's Chronicle that the party will look into the legality of the merger and explore possible actions which could be taken up against the five MLAs.
