Imphal, November 29 2024:
Locals blocked entry of security forces into Awang Sekmai, demanding that central forces be deployed in red zone areas along the foothills and not in residential pockets.
Speaking to reporters, Awang Sekmai Kanba Nupi Lup coordinator Laimayum Baruna informed that residents of Awang Sekmai had been requesting the authorities to deploy security forces and even proposed a site along the foothills for stationing them.
Contrary to their proposals, it has come to light that CRPF personnel would be put up in private properties in Sekmai Thanga Leikai.
"We have already identified suitable sites for the placement of central forces near the red zone area.
It is both unfortunate and condemnable that the forces are being stationed in a residential area on private property, rather than closer to the red zone," she lamented.
Meanwhile, a meeting of clubs, organisations and meira paibi groups of Top to Takhel Sanjenbam in Imphal East district was held in the wake of deployment of central forces in peaceful zones.
The meeting decided to ask the authorities redeploy the forces along the foothills to protect villagers from attacks by Kuki militants.
Speaking at the meeting held at the Top Mayai Leikai Ima Nongmairembi Shanglen, Easter Sporting Association vice president Athokpam Dinesh noted that people settling along the foothills are facing serious risks as they are being attacked by armed Kuki militants from the hilltops, and spending sleepless nights guarding their communities.
He also criticised the authorities for planning deployment of security forces in densely populated areas, rather than in the foothills where they are most needed to protect the lives and property of the Meeteis.
