Imphal, June 25 2021:
Samyukt Kisan Morcha's call for a nationwide protest on Saturday under the slogan of "Save farmers, save democracy" is meant to serve as a wake-up call to the BJP government, Manipur Loumi Lup secretary H Ibobi stated in a release.
According to the release, the BJP government enacted 3 anti-farm bills and promulgated the Electronics Amendment Bill, 2021 as an ordinance amidst the Covid-19 pandemic so to serve the interests of corporate houses, while violating the parliamentary democracy at the same time.
However, farmers across the country have been protesting against such draconian acts for the past 7 months and as part of these protests, a nation-wide protest has been called on Saturday.
During the protest, discussions will be held on how to defeat BJP candidates in the poll bound states.
"BJP government loves to pretend to be a friend of the farmers.
Its announcement on May 31 regarding the Minimum Support Price of 14 products will not help double the income of the farmers.
Additionally, farmers cannot be expected to get the price that they deserve just because the price of 1 quintal of rice has been increased by Rs 72", it added.
Furthermore, price of all agricultural items are at all-time high right now, not to mention the price of fuel needed to power plough machines, harvesting machines, straw processor machines and water pumps has also been hiked.
Thus, the recommendations of Dr Swaminathan Commission need to be implemented to increase the MSP in action, instead of just making an announcement on the same, the release said.
"BJP's claim of increasing the MSP is like dropping a small bag of sugar in a big lake", it remarked.
