Imphal, December 23 2024:
Former deputy chief minister and AICC CWC member Gaikhangam, has strongly condemned the recent remarks by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the Parliament discussion on "75 glorious years of the Constitution of India" on December 17 and demanded that the home minister tender resignation.
"Amit Shah's comments on Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar were disparaging and disgraceful," Gaikhangam said in a statement, describing the comments as satirical and in bad taste.
The home minister was quoted saying, "It is a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar...
if God's name is taken so many times then they would have attained heaven (Swarg) for 7 times" .
Gaikhangam highlighted that the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, immediately demanded an unconditional apology and the resignation of Amit Shah.
However, instead of dismissing the Home Minister, Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended him through a series of six tweets, he rued.
On December 19, the Congress party submitted a privilege notice against Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha.
Reiterating the Congress party's condemnation of Amit Shah's remarks against Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, he called for immediate resignation of Amit Shah.
Gaikhangam pointed out that while the MPs of the INDIA Bloc were peacefully protesting against the remarks, BJP MPs, armed with rods and sticks, were sent to the Makar Dwar in a deliberate conspiracy to shield Amit Shah.
Placards with rods and sticks, which violated Parliament's security protocols, were reportedly used to create chaos.
Gaikhangam further disclosed that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was manhandled during the commotion, resulting in injuries that left him sitting on the ground until a chair was brought for him.
AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, leading the protest alongside several women MPs, was also misbehaved by male BJP MPs.
Instead of taking action, the BJP shifted blame onto the leader of opposition, Rahul Gandhi, falsely accusing the Congress of instigating the disturbance.
Gaikhangam recounted that Rahul Gandhi had raised concerns about the BJP's attempts to divert attention from critical issues like Adani and Manipur.
