Imphal, November 22 2011: Manipur Alliance for Child Rights (MACR) has sought the intervention of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights for safeguarding the right to life, right to education, right to survival and right to protection of the children of around 2000 internally displaced fisherman of Loktak lake whose floating huts have been burnt down by security forces in the name of evicting them allegedly for protection of environment of the lake.

In a memorandum submitted to Chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights Shantha Sinha, MACR urged the Commission to direct the state government for provide immediate relief materials and a safe place for temporary settlement for the displaced young children and their parents, for amending Loktak Lake (Protection) Act, 2006 to make it more humane and fishermen friendly legislation, for the state to make a broad plan for sending back the displaced children to their respective schools as well as for providing an alternative livelihood of the displaced fishermen.
