Imphal, February 20 2021:
There is a strong need for a mass Meira Paibi movement to save Manipur from the clutches of drug abuse and trafficking, said Thangmeiband AC MLA Kh Joykishan today.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the newly built office building of the Ima Khunthokhanbi Nisha Bandh Meira Paibi Lup of Thangmeiband Meisnam Leikai and Kabrabam Leikai, Joykishan said womenfolk started antidrug campaigns in the 1980s to save Manipuri society and its future generation from drugs.
If there were no Meira Paibi movement against drugs, the fate of Manipur would have been uncertain.
However, the momentum of the Meira Paibi movement now seems to have reduced somewhat, he said.
Expressing concern over reports of widespread poppy plantations in the hills, Joykishan said womenfolk of the hills and valley should collectively stand against such illegal cultivations (poppy) and show unity in the fight against drugs.
In addition to the rising number of drug abuse and trafficking cases, there are also many drug/heroin factories mushrooming in Manipur.
The problem of drugs seems to have more devastating impacts on Manipuris than COVID-19 pandemic, he said.
Joykishan also questioned if the Inner Line Permit System is being implemented effectively in the State.
Meanwhile, it may be mentioned that the MLA had also laid the foundation stone for a new building of the Nagamapal Youth Development Club.
