Imphal, October 11 2019:
The United People's Revolutionary Front of Manipur (UPRFM) has called an 18 hour general strike on October 15, against what it termed 'annexation' of Manipur by India on this date in 1949 .
In a statement, the outfit said that Maharaja Bodhchandra was forced to sign the Merger Agreement under duress on September 21, 1949 at Shillong and the agreement came into effect on October 15, the same year.
It is to protest the 'annexation' of Manipur by India that the general strike has been called, said the outfit and added that the strike will be relaxed only in the case of medical emergency and religious ceremonies.
The merger agreement was also not ratified by the then Manipur assembly, said the outfit and argued that hence it is not valid and recalled the history of Manipur dating back to the time of Nongda Pakhangba in 33 AD .
