Thoubal, February 11 2024:
Maintaining that the state government has not taken up any policy and programme to manage waste produced from households and prevent health hazards, Eco-Network Heirok has appealed to the state government to initiate PPP model for waste management.
In a release, Eco-Network stated that it has been involved in garbage collection and cleaning works of rivers along with Heirok Development Club.
However, it distressing that the government has not taken up any policy and programme to manage household waste as is evident from dumping of garbage along the river bank and even into rivers thereby creating health hazards.
In order to prevent health disasters it is imperative that the state government protect the environment and save the rivers and lakes by checking pollution.
The release further informed that the government should formulate PPP model for waste management as such programmes were found to be successful in other states like Madhya Pradesh, the report of which was published in the media during a visit of the state journalists to Indore.
It also noted that the solid waste management plant at Lamdeng remains defunct, thereby testifying that the state government is undermining the importance of waste management.
Moreover, lack of awareness on the part of the public and failure to conduct sensitisation and capacity building programmes are also some reasons for the failure to manage waste.
