Imphal, August 10 2024:
The apex Kuki body, Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) has expressed strong disapproval of the recent remarks made by chief minister N Biren, in which he suggested that his government is prepared to hold peace talks with the representatives of Kuki-Zo people.
KIM denounced these remarks as misleading, asserting that they falsely imply that Kuki-Zo community is open to negotiations for peace and reconciliation within the framework of the state government.
In a statement, KIM reiterated the resolute stance of Kuki-Zo people against engaging in any negotiations with the state government.
KIM holds the state government responsible for the crisis and cited their refusal of an invitation from Hill Areas Committee (HAC) chairman MLA Dinganglung Gangmei on May 8, 2024, as evidence of their position.
In their response, KIM stated that the Kuki-Zo people no longer have ties with the state government, accusing the government of challenging the core of their history and identity.
KIM emphasised that their executive resolution for "non-engagement" with the state government is a reflection of their firm resolve.
They argued that the idea of "Peace and Reconciliation" with the state government and the Meetei community, without first achieving justice for the immense damage and suffering endured by the Kuki-Zo people, is absurd and nonsensical.
However, KIM clarified that they remain open to efforts for justice, particularly in their fight against what they describe as the majoritarian autocracy of the state government.
They stressed that their primary goal is to secure justice for their people and bring an end to their oppression.
KIM also reaffirmed their belief that the creation of a "union territory with legislative powers" is the only acceptable form of justice for the Kuki-Zo people.
Furthermore, KIM made it clear that they have not authorised any individual or entity to represent the Kuki-Zo people in discussions or negotiations with the state government.
They warned that any claims of such a mandate are baseless and misleading, and are unacceptable to the Kuki-Zo people.
In conclusion, KIM called on all media outlets and relevant parties to cease the dissemination of false information and to respect the legitimate position of the Kuki Inpi Manipur and the Kuki-Zo people.
