Imphal, August 09 2022:
Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and United Naga Council (UNC) commended members of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly for unanimously passing the Private Member Calling Attention Motion moved by Thangmeiband MLA Kh Joykisan on August 5 for establishment of state population commission and implementation National Register of Citizen (NRC) in the state.
In a joint release issued Tues day, COCOMI coordinator L Ratan Kumar and UNC secretary S Milan recounted that both the organisations had jointly submitted a memorandum to chief minister N Biren on June 4 and to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 10 demanding constitution of state population commission, update of NRC and not recognising unrecognised villages in Manipur, as the state is facing demographic imbalance caused by influx of illegal immigrants.
The biggest threat that the indigenous people are facing is illegal entry of migrants into the state, hence, it is utmost important that the government launches NRC to identify the number of illegal immigrants, properly deal with them and ensure that no more illegal immigrants enter the state, it emphasised.
The joint release also mentioned that as the Manipur Legislative Assembly has adopted the resolution for implementation of NRC in the state, the state government must take up further necessary actions at the earliest and press the centre for its enforcement in the state.
The state government should also take up steps for establishment of state population commission, which can advise the government efficiently by collecting data scientifically and authentically, as soon as possible, it appealed.
COCOMI and UNC further urged the government to pursue with the Union government for giving permission for the NRC and from their side they will press for its implementation in the state.
It also pointed out as constitution of state population commission is within the power of the state government, it should start making arrangements for establishment of the same.
