The process of removing waste particles piled up in Imphal Barrage and the surrounding areas began today by Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) along with the support of the locals.
The cleanliness drive is being taken up by MPCB under the Swachhta Action Plan 2020-21 in order to keep the rivers clean and to sensitize the public to dump waste materials in proper places.
Speaking on the occasion, Agriculture Minister O Lukhoi requested the public not to pollute the riverine system by dumping waste particles into the river.
Lukhoi continued that farmers and locals have benefited a lot ever since the Imphal Barrage became functional.
He added that the five shutters of the barrage will be replaced soon as the Central Government has allocated funds for the same.
The Minister also sought cooperation from the locals of Lilong and Wangoi Assembly Constituencies to keep the riverine system clean.
Chairman of MPCB, L Radhakishore said that the development of mankind poses a serious threat to the natural environment therefore everyone should work together in maintaining the ecological balance and to protect the environment.
He stated that the waste particles stuck in the shutters of the Imphal Barrage is the main cause for the pollution of the river thereby making it a breeding place for many diseases.
Radhakishore stressed on the need for cleaning the rivers regularly and to keep the river water clean thereby making it fit for human consumption.
He also sought support from local NGOs, CSOs etc for the said cause.
MPCB will be discussing with the Chief Minister in order to take up measures to clean the Kongba River which is highly polluted, he added.
