Many back shutdown call, sit-ins continue

Various bodies including AMSU, DESAM & KSA Jiribam units, Manipur Pradesh-Congress Committee (MPCC), Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Sinpham & Saktam Kanba Lup, International Peace and Social Advancement (IPSA) and Chanura Lamchinglel Kangleipak (CLK) have extended their support to the 24-hour total Athuan Abonmai from Sunday midnight.
Announcing support to the shutdown during a joint press meet held at DESAM Jiribam District Council office, Babupara, on Sunday, Council president Laishram Bilaks Meitei stated that AMSU, DESAM and KSA strongly condemn the murder of Athuan Abonmai.
While lamenting that the state government has not been able to solve the murder case and punish the culprit so far, he insisted that the government must demonstrate that the law is prevalent both in hills and valley.
The joint press meet was also attended by AMSU District Committee vice president S Ranajit Singh and KSA District Council general secretary in-charge Ch Achou Meitei.
Similarly, in a press meet held at Congress Bhawan, Sunday, MPCC spokesperson Ningombam Bupenda Meitei stated that Congress party will support the agitation against the killing of Athuan Abonmai till justice is delivered.
The protest by the party will be organised under the instruction of All India Congress Committee (AICC) senior observer (Manipur) Jairam Ramesh and Manipur in-charge Bhakta Charan Das, former MPs and state leaders, he added.
N Bupenda mentioned that as support to the JAC's agitation, party will close all its offices and cancel all proposed meetings and programmes on Monday.
Meanwhile, Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Sinpham & Saktam Kanba Lup has extended support to 24-hour shutdown being called on Monday by the JAC.
The Lup will actively take part in all the protests till justice is delivered, a release by Lup secretary Thingujam Rani has said.
On the other hand, CLK president Ch Pakpi Chanu said that it will fully support the total shutdown and continue to participate in protests organised by the JAC until justice is ensured.
Meanwhile, sit-in protests continued to be held at different parts of the state demanding justice to Athuan Abonmai on Sunday.
Villagers of Sawombung Namdai village (Kabui Khunjao) and Sawombung Sairem village (Kabui Khunou) organised a sit-in protest on Sunday demanding justice to Abonmai.
Similarly, Wakhallon Mannaba Apunba Kangleipak organised a sit-in protest in front of Rani Gaidinliu's statue at Mantripukhri.
Left Coordination Committee also organised a sit-in protest on Sunday at Irawat Bhawan denouncing the killing of Athuan Abonmai.
Speaking on the occasion, CPI Manipur spokesperson N Singhat contended that left parties are not satisfied with the way the state government has so far conducted itself with regard to the case.
Chief minister N Biren should resign on moral ground to ensure that true justice is served.
The left parties of the state are prepared to participate in all the agitations launched by the JAC formed to ensure justice to Athuan Abonmai, he added.
