Jiribam, February 01, 2013:
Development works have come to a grinding halt in Jiribam owing to rampant monetary demands served by outlawed underground groups.
Jiribam has, of late, witnessed closure of some clinics and pharmacies, apart from ceasing construction works of Govt buildings, due to threats and diktat issued by militant groups active in the subdivision for 'standing against' the concerned put-fits.
Besides, fearing 'unwanted' incidents befalling on them, some individuals have packed up and started looking for greener pastures in neighboring Assam.
Many labourers engaged in construction works of several infrastructures in the subdivision that have been taken up in the recent past were found remaining idle at their respective station (khola) during a survey conducted today by a team of Jiribam based journalists.
The team found, among others, that construction of a 50 bedded Jiri Hospital was halted.
Talking to the journalists, the labourers said some of them were simply asked to stop the work by the contractors citing their inability to draw the bills.
However, some of the labourers were told that their works are stopped due to unbearable monetary served by militant groups.
When insisted, the labourers however refused to divulge the identities of the militant groups which served the demands and the amount of money they demanded.
They simply said that people would come to know the militant groups involved in times to come.
Besides contractors, Govt offices, health centres, the militants were also reported to have served demands to individuals.
Meanwhile, denizen of the subdivision have urged all concerned not to hinder developmental works in the subdivision.
