Kharung Pat sees increase in number of water birds

As done every year, a census of water birds feeding in the wetlands of Kharung Pat and Ikop Pat was carried out today by Thoubal Forest Division in collaboration with Wildlife Explorer Manipur and the team detected 67 species of water birds at Kharung Pat which is more than the figure recorded last year.
Speaking in this connection, Dr L Jeeceelee, DFO Thoubal urged people to refrain from hunting the birds while cautioning that individuals found poaching or killing them may be penalized upto Rs 5 lakh and jailed for 6 months.
Meanwhile Kh Brajesh, president, Wildlife Explorer Manipur informed that the census was conducted in the two wetlands under the jurisdiction of Thoubal Forest Division as a large number of water birds feed here.

At Kharung Pat, 8 teams comprising 2 members each visited eight sites and conducted the survey.
Meanwhile at Ikop Pat, 4 teams carried out the census.
The teams found 67 species of water birds at Kharung Pat, which was more than the number recorded last year.
At Ikop Pat, they counted 33 species of birds.
Stressing on the need to preserve the two wetlands to facilitate better and safer feeding for the water birds, he added that Kharung and Ikop Pat may become tourist hot spots once eco-tourism booms in the country.
It may be mentioned that Dineschandra Salam, Range Forest Officer, Thoubal Range; Laishram Dinesh, Range Forest Officer, Kakching Range, Thoubal Forest Division Beat Officers, staff and local clubs also took part in the census.
