Imphal, November 28 2024:
INDIA Bloc has announced plans to stage protests in Delhi during the ongoing parliament session, voicing strong discontent over the government's failure to resolve the 19-month-long crisis in the state.
Addressing the media at Congress Bhawan here on Thursday, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra criticised the 'double-engine' government for its ineffectiveness in addressing the state's turmoil and for the repeated closure of educational institutions.
Meghachandra questioned the government's intent and capability in ending the violence that has been plaguing Manipur for 18 months.
"When is the government planning to stop the violence in the state? Why has it allowed the violence to con tinue?" he asked, and noted that both in the assembly and through external appeals, political leaders have repeatedly urged the government to initiate dialogues to address the crisis, but no tangible action has been taken to date.
The MPCC president lamented the government's lack of responsiveness, pointing out that multiple requests for a meeting of political parties and appeals for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the state have gone unanswered.
He attributed the worsening situation to the government's failure to engage with the people and address their concerns.
To denounce government's indifferent attitude, INDIA Bloc has decided to organise a protest in Delhi, with participation of national leaders and a delegation from Manipur, he said.
Meghachandra also con demned the indefinite closure of educational institutions in Manipur, calling it a major setback for the students and future generations.
"Manipur must be the only place in the world where the government shuts down educational institutions indefinitely.
This is happening under the double engine government," he remarked.
The Congress president further pointed out that the state had already faced protracted closure of edu cational institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and continuing this trend would irreparably harm students' education and prospects.
He urged the chief minister and his cabinet colleagues to prioritise the concerns of students and the public and to act responsibly, showing concern for the future generation.
He also slammed the government for its failure to lift the ban on internet services, which is a critical resource for education and communication, as well as for its inaction in addressing the frequent blockades of national highways by various organisations and illegal groups.
In a dig at CM N Biren, Meghachandra questioned as to why he (CM) has not been able to meet the Prime Minister to discuss Manipur's crisis and not in a position to post even a single photo with the PM in the latter's office discussing the state's crisis.
He then advised CM Biren to approach the union home minister on the matter.
