Rivers in spate, flood in Jiri, Kpi

Imphal/Kpi/Jiri, October 27 2019:
The non stop downpour from yesterday night till today, has resulted in the water levels at two of the major rivers, Imphal river and Nambul river, rising rapidly and reaching flood level.
The strong current of the water also washed away great parts of the bridge under construction over the Iril river at Sawombung late in the evening today.
In some Khurai areas, the water has even breached the river banks and are flooding the surrounding homes.
Late in the evening today, water from Imphal river overflowed at Thumbuthong and Checkon side.

According to a weather report received from the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Manipur experienced 22.95 mm of rainfall yesterday and 49.32 mm of rainfall today.
Yesterday, Kangpokpi received 68.6 mm of rainfall, Senapati received 61.2 mm and Tamenglong received 66.6 mm of rainfall while Ukhrul received 169.6 mm of rainfall today, Tamenglong received 92.2 mm and Noney received 71.8 mm of rainfall.
The report further mentioned that Imphal West and Imphal East received 51.6 mm and 59.2 mm of rainfall respectively today.
The incessant rainfall has even led to flooding in Mahabali area.
At Kangpokpi too, the incessant rain in the last two days days resulted in a flash flood yesterday night destroying large tracts of paddy fields.
Large areas of paddy fields in Wakotphai and its surrounding areas under T Waichong sub-division have been inundated following the continuous rain in the last two days Similar incidents have been reported from Saikul and Champhai areas as well.
All the paddy field were reportedly seen prepared for the harvesting but the flash flood inundated them.
Meanwhile, landslides have reportedly occurred between Kangpokpi DHQs and Changoubung since yesterday owing following the incessant rainfall.
However, no major blockade of road has been witnessed and no untoward incident reported till now.
The situation is the same at Jiribam with at least 69 houses submerged at Khuchoithup in Kamranga Muslim area.
After the situation was reported to the DC and SP of Jiribam district, rescue mission teams were pressed into service and they helped in evacuating the people and goods, said Pradhan of Hilghat Gram Panchayat L Somorendra while expressing his gratitude to the officials.
An official team led by the DC and the SP took stock of the flood situation.
The Pradhan said that steps will be taken up to open relief camps in consultation with the DC .
