Publication of criminal antecedents stressed

In view of the ensuing State Assembly election, Joint Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ramananda Nong-meikapam has stressed on the importance of publication of criminal antecedents and Postal Ballot (PB) during a function held at Lamphelpat, today.
At the event, the Joint CEO said that the details of the candidate shall be published in one of the local vernacular newspapers and one National newspaper short-listed by the CEO, Manipur, within 48 hours of the selection of the candidate or not less than two weeks before the first date for filing of nominations, whichever is earlier.
It should also be uploaded on social media platforms of the political party, including Facebook and Twitter.
On the publication of the criminal antecedents, Ramananda said that it should include detailed information of the pending criminal cases including nature of the offences and other relevant information of the candidate concerned.
Clarity should also be given for selecting a particular candidate, he said and asked the political party concerned to submit a report to the Election Commission within 72 hours of the selection of the said candidate.
The Joint CEO continued that 929 Postal Ballot forms have been submitted so far out of 33376 forms issued.
Out of the total PB forms issued, 23,393 had been issued to elders (80 years and above) of which 807 have been submitted while 122 forms have been received from People with Disabilities out of 6988 taken, he added.
Altogether 1140 Covid affected persons and 1855 persons employed in essential services also applied for PB forms, he said.
Stating that there are 14 designated camps housing 2,177 cadres belonging to 23 different UG groups under Suspension of Operation (SoO) and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government in Manipur, he maintained that the Election Commission of India has allowed these electors to vote by Postal Ballot (PB) .
