Wild animal meat set on fire

Ukhrul, December 17 2013:
The Ukhrul Division Forest office set on fire meat of wild animals seized from various localities today at the Ukhrul Forest Divisional office, in the presence of CJM staff, student organisations' leaders and the public.
The meats were seized by the officials during a two-day surprise check conducted within Ukhrul township.
The seized wild animals meat were mostly of venison, wild boar and antelope.
The Range Forest Officer, Ukhrul stated that killing and trading in wild animals is prohibited under the Indian Wild Life Act .
During the two-day drive, the officials managed to seize wild meat worth around Rs 10,000 mostly from the women vendors.

The seized items were set on fire around 2 pm today at the divisional office, Ukhrul in front of the general public.
However, no individuals or vendors were arrested in this connection.
The Forest Department is keeping a close tab on such illegal activities, the Forest official said adding that the department is exerting maximum effort to sensitise the public on the importance of preserving the flora and fauna.
Sale of wild animal meat including birds is rampant in the district, especially at this time of the year.
