Remand for UNC leaders extended up to Jan 2

The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East today remanded UNC president Gaidon Kamei and publicity secretary Shangkhel Stephen to judicial custody till January 2 next year.
On the other hand, Tadubi police station formally arrested the two UNC leaders in connection with another FIR case taken up against them and the police were asked to produce the UNC leaders before the Court on December 20 .
Gaidon Kamei (52) s/o Landou Kamei of Noney Part 1 and Shangkhel Stephen (36) s/o Shangkhel Thamok of Komsen village, Chandel district were formally arrested by Tadubi police station after taking due permission from the Court on December 8 .

The two leaders of UNC were produced before the Court under tight security with a prayer to remand them to judicial custody for an extended period.
The Court heard submissions of the UNC leaders' counsels S Naobi and Acham Golmei, APP of the case and Investigation Officer of the case.
The Court noted that the OC of Tadubi police station received a complaint petition filed by one Naorem Arun on November 21 at around 6.20 am.
The complaint said that Arun was transporting chicken feeds towards Imphal when some unknown persons numbering around five suspected to be volunteers of the United Naga Council (UNC) stopped his vehicle near Tadubi bazar along NH 2 and broke the wind shield of the vehicle at around 2 am of November 21 .
The IO in his report stated that the volunteers/supporters of the UNC damaged the vehicle under instruction of UNC leaders namely; UNC vice-president Warngam Anal (50) of Chandel headquarters Zaphou Bazar, general secretary S Milan Tangkhul (65) of Kamjong Ukhrul, assistant secretary Gabriel Mayon (43) of Chandel headquarters, Sina Dam finance secretary, Kaikho Mao (65) of Taphou Senapati, art and culture secretary Rockson Shimray (45) of Ukhrul, speaker Kho John Paomai (67) of Tungjoy Senapati and deputy speaker Adon Pamei (55) of Tamenglong headquarters.
The Court perused the material on record including the case diary and stated that prima facie evidence against the accused persons could not be ruled out at this stage.
The Court then rejected the bail plea of the accused persons and remanded them to judicial custody till January 2 next year.
As there is Christmas holiday and New Year holiday from December 22 to December 31, the alleged accused have been remanded to judicial custody till January 2 next year, said the Court order.
The order also asked police to produce the two accused UNC leaders before the Court on January 2 next year.
The reason for arrest of the two UNC leaders were made known to them and the Court heard their submissions and arguments.
Advocate S Inaobi and Advocate Achamliu Golmei appeared for and on behalf of the alleged accused persons.
