Heavy blows dealt on gold smuggling

Imphal, November 14 2019:
The anti smuggling unit of Customs Division Manipur arrested two individuals with gold bars worth more than Rs 5 crore in two separate incidents during the last two days, from different parts of the State.
According to an official source from Customs Division Manipur, yesterday morning, acting on specific information about the smuggling of gold bars from Imphal to Dimapur inside a passenger vehicle along Imphal-Dimapur road, an anti smuggling unit of Customs Division carried out checks on some suspected vehicles at Awang Sekmai area.

During the check, one person identified as Bhim Bahadur (36) s/o (L) Purna Singh of Molkon village (presently staying at Chingamathak Maibam Leikai, Singjamei) was arrested along with 30 gold bars concealed among his belongings.
The gold bars, worth Rs 1,87,39,740 were seized and a case has been registered for further investigation, the source informed.
On the other hand, another 50 gold bars were seized from the possession of one woman, identified as Tingkholam of Moreh, today, the source added.
The source continued that officers of Customs Preventive Force Moreh Customs Division seized 50 gold bars (worth more than Rs 3,16,14,700) from the said woman near Indo- Myanmar friendship gate number 2 .
Earlier yesterday, sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized gold biscuits hidden inside the chassis of an SUV at Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati, reports NewsLive.
Two persons, identified as Md Tari Monsur and Md Iqbal Hussain and hailing from Thoubal district of Manipur, were arrested following the seizure.
Acting on a tip-off, DRI sleuths carried out a search in an Eco Sports car (bearing registration AS-01-BS-3330) .
The car was heading towards Guwahati from Imphal and was intercepted at Sonapur where the gold biscuits were seized.
The vehicle was then brought to one of the manufacturer workshops where two more biscuits were recovered.
"More than a 100 biscuits were seized at Sonapur where the raid was conducted.
Then the car was brought here where we found two more biscuits hidden inside the chassis," a mechanic of the workshop said.
