Imphal, July 14 2024:
If the BJP led Government doesn't take up effective steps to curb violence and bring about a resolution to the Manipur crisis, the National People's Party (NPP) may withdraw its support on issues concerned, said MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan.
The Kshetrigao Assembly MLA said this at a political meeting of the party on the "Manipur crisis" held at the office of the Khurai Block NPP at Khurai Konsam Leikai today.
Even as reports of gunfights in Jiribam were pouring in from Jiribam, Hassan said the present crisis may turn into a full blown civil war if violence persists.

NPP has been supporting the BJP-led Government in all its development programmes, and because of the alliance between the BJP and the NPP, there were constraints in speaking on the Manipur crisis, Hassan.
He informed that the NPP's National vice president and former Deputy CM, Y Joykumar had recently warned that the NPP in Manipur may withdraw its support if the BJP-led Government doesn't bring about a resolution by October 3 .
Even though the NPP is part of the NDA Government, the party will not remain silent and mute on the Manipur crisis, Hassan said.
The shift in the attitude towards the Government, however, is not aimed at taking political advantage, he said.
There were administrative lapses on the part of the BJP-led Government during the crisis.
Even though there had been lapses, the NPP was closely observing what steps the BJP-led Government was taking up, Hassan said.
The NPP, he said, has been taking important decisions and steps to bring normalcy in the State.
He said NPP leaders including him had met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and submitted a memorandum containing various points to resolve the crisis.
Considering the assurances given by the Union Home Minister during the meeting, NPP had been very patient in dealing with the issues, he added.
Even as schools have opened and economic activities have resumed, the current situation, if further deteriorated, may turn into a civil war, Hassan said.
He further stressed that the people, civil society organisations and the media should take positive roles and point out the shortcomings and wrong deeds of the Government to correct and take steps towards resolving the crisis.
Speaking at the meeting, NPP Manipur president Laitonjam Jayanand said the political meet was held to discuss the current Manipur crisis and the way forward.
A political party's role is not solely to contest elections.
It is NPP's duty to stand with the public on major issues and most importantly bring about a solution to the present crisis and restore peace, he said.
Meiteis at present aren't able to go beyond the valley areas.
Meiteis are unable to go beyond Sekmai, Keithelmanbi, Pallel and Bishnupur's Tronglaobi, he said.
NPP is standing strongly for Manipur's integrity.
The BJP-led Government has also been standing strong for Manipur's integrity, but going by the present situation, the State's integrity seems to have literally broken.
It is time for the NPP to reconsider its relation with the Government, Jayanand said.
He said the BJP and the NPP are like water and oil.
NPP would withdraw its support if the BJP-led Government doesn't bring about a solution to the present crisis by October 3, he said.
