Imphal, December 13 2012:
The hundredth year celebration of Christianity among the Gangte tribe of the State began this evening at Chiengkonpang village in Churachandpur district amidst pomp and fanfare.
The inaugural ceremony of the four-day long celebration programme was marked by presentation of songs by various area choirs and a massive torch rally led by Pastors and Church Elders.
The celebration programme was formally declared open by Elder (Prof) LS Gangte, Chairman of GCGCC.
The Gospel set its foot among the Gangtes of the State for the first time at Saichang village under Henglep subdivision of Churachandpur district in 1912 .
Since then the Gospel has made its way among the people and transformed the hearts of each member of the Gangte, once a head-hunting tribe.
Though thin in population, the Gangtes, better known more for their humorous nature, have made their prominent presence felt in all spheres.
Significantly, the first tribal Matriculate of the State was (L) Dr TC Tongngul Gangte, who passed the same exam in 1924 .
