Imphal, February 11 2025: Titular king and Rajya Sabha Member Leisemba Sanajaoba has asked the Indian Parliament to implement the Manipur Merger Agreement 1949 in letter and spirit.

Raising the issue of Manipur Merger Agreement in the Parliament during zero hour today, Leisemba Sanajaoba pointed out that Manipur, though small, once existed as an independent kingdom with a proud history and civilization spanning over 5000 years.

Manipur became a part of India under the Manipur Merger Agreement 1949 but the successive Governments at the Centre did not respect or uphold the agreement.

Such attitude of the Government of India has pained the people of Manipur and evoked a feeling of betrayal, he said.

The 8th article of Manipur Merger Agreement 1949 unequivocally talks about elevating the socio-economic, cultural and political status of Manipur, the titular king asserted.

The last para of the same article mentioned that the Government of India would take up appropriate measures in order to give employment to Manipuri people in public services and other sectors.

The same para assures that the Government of India will protect the customs, laws and religions of Manipur, Sanajaoba told the Rajya Sabha.

However, no appropriate measures or safeguards have been taken up to fulfil the assurances given by the Government of India through the Manipur Merger Agreement 1949, he decried.

The titular king then urged the Government of India to take up appropriate measures in order to elevate the socio-economic, cultural and political status of Manipur and implement the Manipur Merger Agreement in letter and spirit.
