Save Sharmila Irom: Candle light vigil at Chandigarh

Manipur Students' Association, Chandigarh (MSAC) reportedly organised a candle light vigil tonight in solidarity to Irom Chanu Sharmila's 12 years of campaign demanding scrapping of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 .
The event organised in collaboration with The Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign (SSSC) and YUVSATTA saw a huge turnout comprising of students and NGO activists, said a MSAC release issued today.
The event was marked by candle light vigil, short speeches, signature campaign and a group song named "ECHE" based on her supreme sacrifice to save humanity.
MSAC president Sairem Paikhomba Meetei mentioned that non-violence is the key to peaceful and humanitarian society.
"It is time for all of us to come forward regardless of our ideological differences to strengthen her goals for democratic and peaceful society", he said.
MSAC also condemned continuous imposition of the draconian AFSPA and appealed the rest of India to listen to Sharmila's call.
There are various ways by which India can show concern to North-Eastern states like recognition, reinforcement, development, care and attention towards its people, the MSAC release stated.
