Imphal, September 10 2014:
Deployment of security forces in Ukhrul town can never be interpreted as militarization.
Rather it was for expansion of the State administration over the State's nook and corner.
But following yesterday's attack on security forces, the State Government would have no other option than to deploy security forces in the district, stated MLA RK Anand.
He was speaking at the 49th foundation of the Social Union Nascent (SUN) Club, Mongshangei, Imphal West district.
On the occasion of the foundation day, a newly constructed building of the club was also inaugurated.
Anand condemned the act of killing a police personnel and injuring two others during a twin attack launched by militants along Imphal-Ukhrul road last morning.
He speculated that NSCN-IM was behind the twin attacks as no other UG groups are active in the area.
NSCN-IM's activities were growing during the past decade in Ukhrul district even though the ceasefire agreement signed between the Government of India and NSCN-IM does not cover Manipur.
Before Ukhrul ADC Member Ngalangzar Malue was assassinated on July 12 this year, late MLA Wungnaoshang Keishing and Deputy Speaker Preshow Shimray were also ambushed at different places within Ukhrul district, he reminded.
It was during the BJP-led NDA regime that Manipur was put in flames during the June mass movement of 2001 soon after the June 14 Bangkok declaration which said the ceasefire agreement between NSCN-IM and New Delhi would have no territorial limits.
Subsequent upon the historic mass movement, the phrase 'without territorial limits' was dropped from the ceasefire agreement.
Anand also acknowledged the immense contribution of SUN Club in the field of games and sports.
He noted that SUN Club have successfully groomed many women footballers of National and international calibre.
SUN Club president Koijam Joykumar, Mongshangei Gram Panchayat Pradhan Hawaibam Premkanta, Mayai Lambi Service Station proprietor Sadokpam Menan and BOSEM Controller of Examinations Keithellakpam Tiken were also present at the foundation day function.
As part of the function, painting, recitation and monologue competitions were also held.
Meritorious awards were also distributed to students of the locality who scored outstanding marks in Class X and Class XII exams.
