JAC signs Memorandum of Agreement with State Government
Son of Abonmai to be appointed as SI, compensation of Rs 10 lakh agreed

After four rounds of talk, the Joint Action Committee Against the Brutal Murder of Athuan Abonmai and the State Government have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) today.
Both the JAC and the State Government agreed to acknowledge that the FIR lodged into the crime involved in the killing, has been taken over by the National Investigation Agency for investigation.
It was agreed that an inquiry into the facts and circumstances leading to the death of late Athuan Abonmai, and to fix responsibility thereof, will be conducted by an officer, not below the rank of an Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Manipur.
As far as possible, the inquiry will be completed within 3 months.

The inquiry will be independent of the investigation to be conducted by the NIA, and the findings thereof may be submitted to the NIA, the parties (JAC and State Government) agreed.
Other points agreed upon include appointment of eldest son of late Athuan Abonmai to the post of Sub Inspector in the Manipur Police Department and provision for compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of late Athuan Abonmai and identification of site by Deputy Commissioner concerned with JAC for establishing a graveyard of late Athuan Abonmai and where a memorial site could be set up in his memory.
It was also agreed that the JAC will suspend all forms of agitation and extend cooperation to the police and all investigating agencies to facilitate the early completion of the investigation and to take steps for receiving custody of the body of the late Athuan Abonmai for conducting funeral, with assistance from the Deputy Commissioner concerned.
The JAC Against the Brutal Murder of Athuan Abonmai, in a statement also noted that the MoA was executed with certain points and conditions and thanked all the leading civil society organisations (CSOs) and others for extending moral and physical support towards democratic form of protest and agitation proposed by the JAC.
The JAC further said that it will announce the date, place and time to hold the funeral programme of Athuan Abonmai at the earliest and requested all leading CSOs and people from different parts of the State to join in paying last respect to the departed leader.
In the meantime, Special Judge NIA Manipur directed the Chief Judicial Magistrate Tamenglong to transfer all the judicial dockets/records of Abonmai Murder case-FIR number 4 (9) 2021 of Tamenglong Police Station, to NIA Court Manipur before October 18.It also directed to hand over all the related documents, case dairies, material exhibits seized in connection with the case to the Chief Investigating Officer of National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The order directing the transfer of the case record and other materials was passed by Special Judge NIA Manipur on October 4 in connection with an application filed by Deputy Superintendent of Police/ Chief Investigating Officer, NIA Branch Office, Hyderabad, Bengaluru camp.
