Chief Minister Okram Ibobi initiated the month-long 7th World Environment Day celebration today at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound.
The month-long celebration is being organised by the Royal Riders, Manipur in association with Green Revolution Manipur.
Speaking at the inaugural event, the Chief Minister stated that the State is constituted of 90 per cent forest land.
The rate of environmental degradation in the State can be easily curbed if the massive deforestation practised in the forest areas is checked, the CM stated.
"The State has taken up every possible measure to stop deforestation," Ibobi said.
"We are coming up with schemes to provide jobs to forest settlers; efforts are on to supply adequate number of cooking gas so that these people who depend on the forest for a living can reduce the massive deforestation that are taking place everyday," he added.
Regarding the preservation of Shirui Lily, Ibobi said that his Government has approached the village chief and locals of Ukhrul district with its plan to mark the area as a protected site.
He expressed hope that the public would co-operate with the Government's design for a 'better tomorrow' .
The CM also handed over saplings and seedlings to the Royal Riders Manipur president Miren Thangjam during the inaugural event.
Environment and Ecology Wing Director M Homeshor Singh and retired Principal, DM College of Science G Tomba Sharma were also present at the inaugural event held
today.
