Imphal, September 05 2014 :
At least two students sustained injuries when police fired tear gas canisters, smoke bombs and baton charged students of Wangoi Higher Secondary School who were protesting on the demand for posting requisite number of teachers at their school.
Soon after the agitating students came out of their school campus through the main gate, police cracked down upon them.
The students who sustained injuries in the crack down are Wahengbam John (16) s/o Shanti of Wangoi Wahengbam Leikai and Yumnam Singhajit (17) s/o Norendro of Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai.
They are Science students of class XI and XII respectively.
They have been taken to Advanced Speciality Hospital and Research Institute, Palace Compound.
Some other students too sustained minor injuries.
Th Minakumar Meitei, an office bearer of the school students' union said that they have been protesting since yesterday.
He said that they were fired tear gas canisters, smoke bombs and even baton charged the minute they came out of the school gate.
Police action on the agitating students was too harsh and unwarranted, he decried.
On being approached by the Principal, the Education(S) Director reportedly said, "They (students) are children.
Let them agitate a little" .
The Director's statement smacked of sheer irresponsibility and contempt.
There are shortage of teachers and there is no Librarian apart from deficient infrastructure.
The school compound has been transformed into a garbage pit of the nearby market in the absence of proper compound fence, Minakumar said.
